The Addiction

We always talk about the influences of the Internet and especially cyber games among teenagers. If we Google the phrase above, we would find about 4,810 related websites. There would be researches from social scientist, scholars and various other academic writing and publications on the issue. It is serious.

And I personally experienced it a few days ago.

Well, if you do not know which phone I was using, it is the Sony Erricson K850i.

The phone was a great asset. Besides the small little keypads that are tinnier than my short fingers and hard to press, the phone has very good features like the camera.

I dropped the phone when I accidentally slipped and fell during a phone conversation with Darling. The button to the phone's camera was indented. But it was working very fine. I just couldn't use the shortcut button anymore.

Then, the problem came when I couldn't take pictures at certain times. The next thing I knew was when my touch key (works like a touch screen) couldn't work anymore! The most frustrating thing was that it work at times, but most of the time ... doesn't.

I couldn't read my messages, go into the phone's menu, put an alarm to wake me up the next morning or even felt irritated when I couldn't take a picture using my phone's camera. It was as if my life was fully defendant on the phone! I couldn't believe it was happening to me.

I actually felt irritated, restless, insecure and ....... lost!

It was very alarming.

So, I rushed through the traffic in KL although my best friend was in town, to send my phone for servicing. In that tiny moment, I felt so pathetic.

Darling was very nice to have gone all the way in search of his sister's old phone so I could still receive phone calls even though I do not have my phone book with me.

For the pass few days without the phone book, I didn't know who message me but could only guess it right through the tone of the message. There are only few numbers I could remember. Like my family's, their houses', Darling's... and sorry, I could only remember the last 4 digits of Pei's phone number even though we do contact each other very often.

You see, phone books on our phone actually weaken the memory of our brains!

Our mothers and grandmothers could remember phone numbers from the back of their heads. And as they grew very much older, today, my grandmother still has her conventional phone book using a very small address book that she keeps tightly beside her bed. How good is that?

If you loose your handphone, at least you could still call them by referring to numbers written in the address book. I wish I can do that!

The best we could have today, would be those that keep business cards in its categories or in alpherbatical order. Then again, the collection would continue to grow until it needs boxes to be kept.

I think technology build/train us to be very lazy people. We have become very dependant on our laptops, computer, mp3, etc. A lot of companies today couldn't go on with most of their business deals just because the internet line couldn't work and everyone lost touch through their email boxes. OK, maybe it gets better now as we can go online and send little documents or graphics using our PDAs and other kinds of smart phones.

Bah~

When the remote control is lost in the house, nobody even bother switching the channel on the TV!
When our laptops doesn't startup due to a very mean virus, we felt disconnected from the world!
When the mobile phone is lying in the servicing center waiting to be dissected, we felt lost!

Arrgghh~

Sooner or later, I do believe that we would come to a point of time where scenes in Wall-E would come true.

Addiction and being too reliant is scary.

However, let's just face it. We really can't leave our mobile phone, right? Haha!

Darling and I are currently having a little craze. OK, maybe it is just me.

!!!!Monopoly!!!!

I still remember times when my sister, cousins and I would sit down to play Monopoly when we were young. The set that I had at home was based on all streets in Singapore. I still remembered how we all fight to get Orchard Road because it was the lot just before GO, thus, the most expensive lot! :D

But now, we could play it on our computers and laptops, watching the dice roll, buy properties and building hotels! A lot more animation equals more fun :)

Can't wait til' my sister arrives from Germany! Like Darling's suggestion, we may welcome her with a big bucket of Kentucky Friend Chicken. Haha!
